PSA test methods

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (hot melt PSAs) serve many applications in labels, tapes, and a wide variety self adhesive products. The main properties of hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives are:

  • 100% solids
  • Instantaneous adhesion, only after applying little pressure
  • Quick and easy to apply self adhesive products
  • Large variety of adhesion properties

How to apply hot melt adhesives

Hot-melt adhesives are applied in a hot molten state and must flow on the substrate to ensure a good wetting and adhesion.

Measuring physical properties such as viscosity, softening point or modulus is relevant and important for characterizing PSA adhesives. Therefore properties can be set to create the right behavior of the self adhesive end product.

Adhesive Rheology

By means of the rheological properties it is possible to predict the performance of a PSA, while adhesion properties such as tack, peel strength and holding power are control tests. PSA’s are a complex adhesive where many parameters are of importance.

Adhesion properties depend on experimental parameters such as temperature, pressure, rate of debonding and, of course, nature of the adhesive and substrate as well.

Some associatons such as the ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) or FINAT (European Association of the Self-Adhesive, Labeling Industry) or the British PSTC (Pressure sensitive tape council). Normalized tests are well defined and defined standard test methods.
